A collective of educators and students engages in immersive art- and design-driven practice to reimagine higher-education and primary-school teaching and learning at, and beyond, the University of Teacher Education.

Rooted in curiosity, care and attentiveness to diverse histories and voices, the collective offers open-ended impulses that anyone can adapt, question or extend across a growing constellation of educational hubs.

Method: Empathy Interview

Overview:

A 30-minute paired exercise that deepens understanding of practicum challenges through role-play, centering respectful, context-aware inquiry.

  1. Introduction (5 min):
    • Select one concrete challenge from your practicum.
    • Choose to be interviewed as yourself or to adopt the role of a stakeholder (e.g., learner, teacher, caregiver).

  2. Conduct the Interview (10 min)
    In pairs, alternate roles:

    • Interviewer asks questions in four broad categories—then you craft your own to keep it focused.
      1. Experience Description (e.g., “What happened in that moment?”)
      2. Perspective Taking (e.g., “How might the learner have felt?”)
      3. Environment & Interaction (e.g., “What role did the space play?”)
      4. Solutions & Growth (e.g., “What support would have helped?”)

    • Interviewee responds in character, surfacing emotions, needs, and ideas.

  3. Debrief & Insight Capture (10 min)
    • Share surprises, emotions, and new angles.
    • Note three key insights for possible solutions.

  4. Group Share (5 min)
    • Each pair names one insight and a next-step idea.

Cultural & Contextual Sensitivity:
Honour varied identities and power dynamics by co-constructing questions, inviting voluntary role-play, and ensuring every voice shapes empathetic, equitable design.
